On February 23rd, Val Nelson and Kaylee Hannah from Portage Service for Seniors had 5 minutes to present a pitch to the women in attendance at the 150 Women Who Care event. Below is our speech and presentation video.

Hello. My name is Val Nelson, and I am here with my colleague Kaylee Hannah. We work for Portage Service for Seniors, an organization that provides vital services to help older adults remain in their homes for as long as possible. One of our most important services is our meal program, which ensures that seniors in our community have access to healthy, nutritious meals.

As of the last census, there are over 3,000 seniors in our community who are eligible for our services. Unfortunately, many of these seniors live below the poverty line and struggle to afford basic necessities like food. That’s where our meal program comes in. we have three congregate meal programs and two meals on wheels programs that serve lunch and supper to seniors in need.

Last year, we were able to run a free meal program for 37 people thanks to the generosity of Help Age Canada. These were people who struggled to afford healthy meals and often ran out of food before the month was over. Now, we are hoping to expand our meal program even further with the help of our community.

We are asking for your support to provide one meal per week to a senior in need at the cost of $9 per meal with all monies going towards the meals. With your help, we can make sure that every qualified senior in our community has access to a hot, nutritious meal. Not only will this help curb the need for such a basic necessity, but it will also improve the health and wellbeing of our seniors.

Regularly eating healthy and nutritious meals has been proven to improve overall health and increase activity levels. Additionally, having regular contact with old and new friends can significantly decrease isolation, which has only become more of an issue since the pandemic.

We have some very important people ready to share their experiences with you.

By coming together as a community, we can make a difference in the lives of our seniors and ensure that they can live with dignity and independence for as long as possible.

Another successful year of Stocking Stuffers for Seniors has come to an end! On behalf of Portage Service for Seniors, we would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our staff and volunteers for their hard work helping us make another year of this program run so smoothly.

We also want to give a HUGE thank you to all the wonderful people, businesses, organizations, and schools who have generously donated to Stocking Stuffers for Seniors.

Thank-you to our wonderful volunteers who helped organize and pack up the stockings this year, and thank-you to all of our lovely volunteers who are going to be delivering the stockings to our seniors today!

We are so very grateful for your continuous support and without all of you, this program wouldn’t be possible.

Happy Holidays! We wish you all the best for the new year!

Around Christmas time we have a program called “Stocking Stuffers for Seniors” and we pack stockings for seniors in the community who don’t have much family, or may be alone during the holiday season. We pack stockings to help make the holiday season a little bit brighter for them. We are expecting to send out 200 stockings to 200 seniors in the community this year.

A few examples of items for the stockings are:

  • Socks, face masks, slippers, prepackaged pocket Kleenex, mitts, toques, scarves, earmuffs, lap blankets

  • Soap, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Loofa/facecloths, Hairbrush/combs, deodorant, razors, floss, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, lip balms, denture supplies

  • Pens/pencils, crosswords, word searches, sudoku puzzles, books, deck of cards, puzzles, colouring books, journals, calendars, activity books, markers, colouring pencils

  • Christmas Ornaments, Christmas Cards

  • Individually wrapped: Candy, chocolate, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, Jell-O/pudding cups, cup of soup packets

This year we are looking for any donations, if you are able to contribute. 100% of all monetary donations received are put directly towards purchasing items for the stockings! If you are unsure of what to donate, or need any clarification, please let me know!! Donations can be dropped off at our office (we are located inside the Herman Prior Centre), or we can pick-up your donations upon request. We will be accepting donations until December 19th 2022.

Additionally, if you know of a senior(s) in Portage la Prairie that you think would enjoy a stocking this year, please let us know before December 16th 2022, and we will add them to our list.
